Maintenance Apprentice – School Facility Maintenance

About the role

This apprenticeship supports the upkeep of a school’s physical plant, ensuring that classrooms, grounds and equipment remain safe and functional for daily educational use. The apprentice works under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, gaining hands‑on experience across a wide range of building systems.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance inside and outside the plant, including ceiling, roof, electrical, plumbing, painting, concrete, masonry, glazing, insulation, tile, and pump/fan repairs.
• Account for materials and labor on assigned tasks and maintain compliance with state, local and Board safety and code requirements.
• Carry out district‑wide grounds work such as plowing, salting, field marking, and maintenance of underground sprinkler systems.
• Recommend supplies and equipment for purchase and manage inventory of hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies.
• Read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

Required profile

• High School Diploma.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to meet physical demands, including frequent standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lb (occasionally up to 90 lb), and climbing ladders.
• Commitment to safety, code compliance and accurate record‑keeping.

Required skills

• General building maintenance (electrical, plumbing, painting, concrete, masonry, glazing, insulation, tile, pump/fan repair).
• Grounds maintenance (plowing, salting, field marking, sprinkler system upkeep).
• Inventory management of tools and supplies.
• Ability to read and follow technical manuals and safety guidelines.
