Technical Officer, Traditional Medicine (UN Volunteer)

About the role

The WHO Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) is seeking a UN Volunteer Technical Officer, Traditional Medicine, based in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. The assignment supports the regional traditional medicine workplan 2026-2027, helping strengthen policies, regulation, research and the safe integration of traditional medicine into national health systems across the African Region.

Key responsibilities

• Support Member States in developing and updating traditional medicine policies, legislation, regulatory frameworks and integration approaches.
• Help coordinate REACT meetings, African Traditional Medicine Day and regional technical activities.
• Contribute to quality assurance, regulation and post-market surveillance of herbal medicines.
• Contribute to research, publications, the regional pharmacopoeia initiative and the WHO TCIM Global Library.
• Support cooperation with WHO partners and monitor activities, budgets, indicators and reporting under the regional workplan.

Required profile

• Master's degree in pharmacy, medicine, public health, pharmacology, ethnopharmacology, ethnobotany, health sciences or a related field.
• At least 7 years of professional experience in public health, pharmaceutical systems, regulation of health products or traditional medicine.
• Knowledge of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine, including policy, regulation, research or health-system integration.
• Experience drafting technical documents and organizing technical meetings or workshops.
• Fluent French and English required; working knowledge of Portuguese is desirable.
