Site and Research Manager for Gorilla Conservation

About the role

The Wildlife Conservation Society seeks a dynamic Site and Research Manager to lead research and monitoring activities at the Mondika field station in Nouabalé‑Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo. The role combines scientific oversight, staff supervision, and coordination with tourism operations.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise implementation of research protocols, coordinate fieldwork of all research teams, and participate in daily gorilla follows and habituation.
• Oversee data collection (behavioral observations, health monitoring, meteorology) using tools such as the Animal Observer App, SMART, and Cybertracker, ensuring reliability and standardization.
• Train and develop Congolese research staff in reduced‑impact protocols, data management, and reporting, and support their professional growth.
• Manage camp logistics, food supplies, equipment maintenance, and ensure minimal tourist impact on the site.
• Prepare monthly site reports for the NNNP Director of Research, project co‑directors, and tourism team, and represent the research team during tourist visits.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or extensive relevant conservation field research experience.
• Fluency in French and English (oral and written).
• Proven experience managing a remote field site, supervising staff, and planning work.
• Physical fitness for tropical forest work and ability to live in isolated camps with limited utilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Excel and Word; working knowledge of GIS, SMART, and R.
• Field tracking and navigation skills using GPS and compass.
• Experience with camera traps and wilderness first‑aid training (preferred).
