Senior Climate Screening & E&S Safeguards Expert

About the role

NTU International is looking for a senior expert to lead climate screening and environmental & social safeguards for a EU‑funded technical assistance project supporting ECOWAS transport governance. The role focuses on integrating climate resilience, sustainability and social inclusion into regional transport infrastructure planning and implementation.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct climate risk screenings and resilience assessments for transport corridors and infrastructure projects across the ECOWAS region.
• Provide technical guidance on environmental and social safeguards in line with EU and international standards.
• Prepare, review and support Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), resettlement frameworks and stakeholder engagement plans.
• Integrate climate adaptation, gender equality, disability inclusion and other social safeguards into project design and delivery.
• Advise ECOWAS institutions and national stakeholders on safeguard compliance and climate mainstreaming.
• Develop safeguard procedures, methodologies and technical guidance documents.
• Deliver capacity‑building workshops, training sessions and technical support on climate screening and E&S safeguards.
• Support monitoring, reporting and quality assurance of safeguard‑related activities.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in environmental sciences, climate change, sustainability, natural resource management or a related field.
• At least 10 years of professional experience in environmental and social safeguards, climate resilience or sustainable infrastructure development.
• Minimum 7 years of experience specifically in climate screening and risk analysis.
• Proven experience on infrastructure or transport projects in developing countries, preferably in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
• Experience with international development cooperation and donor‑funded programmes.
